        frequently asked questions

how do we lay on the table for a prenatal massage?

During a prenatal massage, mom is positioned to be side lying while working on the back of the body to prevent furthering lower back pain and pelvic discomfort.  We also have much better access to the hips in this position, which can be great to help release tension in that area. When laying face up we incline the table slightly to take pressure off from the growing uterus.

can I get a prenatal massage in the first trimester?

YES!!! Prenatal massage is safe at ANY stage in pregnancy.  It is so important to know that massage therapy is safe, and there is absolutely no research or evidence that links it to early loss.   Many businesses that offer massage, usually bigger corporations, will avoid offering massage in the first trimester because miscarriage is so common during that time period, and they do not want the liability or to be blamed. This unfortunately reinforces the rumor that massage is somehow dangerous during pregnancy, which is false.

can we use deeper pressure during a prenatal massage?

Yes!  Deeper pressure, when administered by a knowledgeable and trained professional (hello!), is safe during a prenatal massage. Skip the initial visit where you go to the spa and are denied deeper pressure because "it's not safe for the baby", or "you have to be gentle while you're pregnant"... not true!!! The most important thing is that you are comfortable and happy on the table. If deep pressure is what you prefer and what feels GOOD to you, then that's what we can offer you.

how often should I come in for a prenatal massage?

Even getting just one massage during your pregnancy is beneficial, but in an ideal world we would stick to your OB/Midwife schedule:

4-28 weeks  /  monthly

29-36 weeks  /  every other week

37-delivery  /   weekly

how late in pregnancy can I get a prenatal massage?

You may come in for prenatal massage until you go into active labor, or surpass 42 weeks in gestation. If you have a massage scheduled and you end up going into the early stages of labor, you are welcome to come in if you can lay comfortably on the table and you find that a massage would help you.  If you are too uncomfortable to lay still and enjoy the session, you are likely too far along in labor and we should reschedule for a postpartum massage.  I do not charge a cancellation fee for labor cancellations, totally out of your control and SO EXCITING! So book away!

can I book add ons to my massage during pregnancy>

Yes!  Cupping, muscle scraping, and TMJ work are all safe during pregnancy.  In fact, cupping and muscle scraping have done wonders for my prenatal clients, and TMJ work is very beneficial before delivery.  The jaw is closely linked and connected to the pelvis (think "cranio-sacral" work), so when we release the jaw, the pelvis also responds positively.

do you offer belly massage for the baby?

We do offer abdominal massage during our 90min prenatal session.  With the extra time we are able to incorporate belly massage that can be very helpful with round ligament pain, rib pain, lower back pain, and the baby enjoys it as well.  It is always optional and can be discussed at the beginning of your session.

how soon after giving birth can I get a postpartum massage?

My general advice is to stick to the 5-5-5 rule.  5 days in the bed, 5 days on the bed, 5 days around the bed.  Rest rest rest!!  Around the 4 week mark is a good time to think about booking your first postpartum massage if you haven't already.  The key is to rest as much as possible and not go anywhere you don't have to.  With that being said, if you are at any point miserable and are desperate for a session PLEASE come in!! You will fill out a postpartum intake form that will give us an idea of how you're doing and how we might need to adjust the session to make you the most comfortable.  C-section deliveries will have a side lying position until the incision has healed.

can I get a massage if I'm breastfeeding?

Yes! We have a bolster available for breastfeeding moms, sensitive chests, and large chested women that takes pressure off and makes it more comfortable to lay face down.  Don't worry about leaking during the session, it is super common as we're increasing the oxytocin in your body, and we have a specific laundry protocol to sanitize in these cases.

can we work on my c-section scar?

Yes! If you are interested in C-section scar mobilization, please book a 90min postpartum massage.  The incision must be healed and we generally start around the 6 week mark.  We can talk about how to incorporate these techniques at home to accelerate your healing.

can I bring my baby to the massage?

Yes! **Newborns only** If you are newly postpartum, and you would feel more comfortable bringing your newborn to the session you are more than welcome to.  We take advantage of how much newborns sleep so mom can rest on the table with the baby nearby.  If the baby needs their mama for any reason we can pause the session so you can do whatever you need. I have had moms breastfeed on the table while I'm massaging, and its truly such a beautiful thing to offer new moms.  Please bring a pack n play, any necessary items you will need for them, and alert your therapist before your session so we are aware ahead of time.

do you take walk-ins?

No!  We are by appointment only, our office is closed if we are not in session with a scheduled client.

do you sell gift certificates?

Yes all gift certificates are electronic and are available in the "Gift Card" section on our website menu above.

do you take insurance?

We are unable to accept insurance for massage sessions.  Most insurance companies see Massage Therapy as Alternative Care and refuse to cover any costs, but you are always welcome to submit your receipts for reimbursement.
